Meknes welcomes 16 title contenders for Africa Clubs Championship for Winners’ Cup

Eight men's and eight women's teams will participate in the 37th CAHB Men's and Women's Africa Clubs Championship for Winners’ Cup, which will be held in Meknes, Morocco, from 24 August to 2 September.

Meknes is hosting the tournament for the fourth time, after having been hosts in 1996, 2001 and 2008.

The COVID-19 situation has strongly affected this competition – in 2020, the African Handball Confederation had to cancel the 36th edition, and this year, the event was originally scheduled for May, but the pandemic forced the organisers to postpone it.

The championship brings together the winners of the various cups in African countries. The draw for the competition was held on 16 August in Casablanca, Morocco, and the results are as follows:

Men's Competition
Group A: Al-Ahly (Egypt), FAP (Cameroon), Red Star Oja (Ivory Coast), Sokoto Rima (Nigeria)
Group B: Widad Smara (Morocco), JSK (DR Congo), Inter Clube (Angola), ASFA (Senegal)

Women's Competition
Group A: Petro (Angola), TKC (Cameroon), HC Heritage (DR Congo), Rumuri (Burundi)
Group B: DGSP (Congo), FAP (Cameroon), Habitat (Ivory Coast), ASPAC (Benin)

The preliminary group games will take place on 24, 26 and 28 August in the men's competition and on 25, 27, 29 August in the women's tournament. All participating teams will progress to the quarter-finals, and the matches of this stage will be played on 30 August (men) and 31 August (women).

The semi-finals for both tournaments are scheduled for 1 September, while the finals and the third-place encounters will take place on 2 September.

Notably, both title holders, winners of the 35th edition of the championship in 2019 – ES Sahel H.C. (men) and Primeiro de Agosto (women) – are not participating.

The Men’s African Super Cup, which is usually held before the Africa Clubs Championship for Winners’ Cup and is the qualification event for the 2021 IHF Men’s Super Globe, will be held in Cairo, Egypt on 10 September. The Women’s African Super Cup was already organised in May, with Angola’s Primero de Agosto claiming the title.
