16 teams will line up for the 16th edition of the M18 EHF EURO, the premium event for the top European sides in this age category, which is set to take place in Montenegro’s capital, Podgorica, between 4 and 14 August.
The competition will be back after only one year, after the 2020 edition, scheduled to have taken place in Slovenia, was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last year, the M19 EHF EURO 2021 was won by Germany, who secured the title with a win against hosts Croatia, 34:20.
The 16 sides who will take to the court in Podgorica were divided into four groups of four teams each, with the top two sides in each group progressing to the main round. The other two sides, who will place third and fourth, will continue in the Placement Matches round.
Hosts Montenegro had the right to choose which group to join once the other rows were determined, and the hosts went into Group B with Croatia, Portugal, and Italy.
Reigning champions Germany, the team who have won the largest amount of gold medals in the history of the competition – three – face a tough group and will meet Iceland, Hungary and Poland on their way to trying to retain their title.
After winning the M20 EHF EURO 2022 three weeks ago, Spain will be trying to do the double, but their challenge is already difficult after the draw allocated them to Group D, alongside Sweden, France and the Faroe Islands.
The M18 EHF EURO 2022 will serve as a qualifying event for the 2023 IHF Men’s Youth World Championship, which will take place next summer in Croatia.
