The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games Organising Committee (LA28) have revealed the full Olympic Games sporting programme ahead of the event which takes place in July 2028 in the United States of America.

Ahead of the official Opening Ceremony, which takes places on Friday 14 July 2028, the men’s and women’s handball competitions get underway at the Long Beach Arena.

The men’s preliminary round opens up handball at LA28 on Wednesday 12 July with the two competitions alternating each day (with no games on Friday 14 July due to the Opening Ceremony) until Saturday 22 July when the women play their last preliminary round of action. Each day of the preliminary round will feature three sessions of two games per session (six games per day).

The quarter-finals will be played on Sunday 23 July (men) and Monday 24 July (women), ahead of the men’s semi-finals on Tuesday 25 July and women’s semi-finals on Wednesday 26 July. The men’s medal matches will take place on Thursday 27 July, with the women’s competition wrapping up handball at LA28 with their medal matches on Friday 28 July, ahead of the Closing Ceremony on 30 July 2028.

A total of 46 handball sessions are planned, with the ticket registration period opening in January 2026. For more information on buying tickets click HERE.

LA28 will mark the biggest Games ever, featuring 51 sports across 49 competition venues in 18 zones throughout the Los Angeles region and Oklahoma City.

The Games will feature a record-breaking number of female Olympians, with every team sport featuring an equal or greater number of women’s teams compared to men’s teams for the first time ever, and 50.5% of the total athlete quota allocated to women across the 51 sports.

Other highlights of the competition schedule reveal include Day 1 staging the most women’s finals on an opening day of the Gamesand a record-breaking ‘Super Saturday’ with 26 finals sessions and Olympic champions to be named across 23 sports.

“With Olympic ticket registration opening in January of 2026, now is the time to start planning what events you want to attend, which sports are coming to your neighbourhood and the moments of history you don’t want to miss,” said LA28 Chief Executive Officer Reynold Hoover to the LA28 website.

“Athletes and fans from around the world now have what they need to plan an unforgettable Olympic experience.”

Last week LA28 announced details of their volunteering programme. Opportunities are available throughout the LA region leading up to the LA28 Games with details on Games-time volunteer roles shared next 2026 as the “…programme continues to evolve leading up to 2028,” according to the LA28 website.
