Looking Back: London Handball Qualification 2012

The second set of tournaments provided the final teams for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Great Britain.

WOMEN’S TOURNAMENTS
The women’s tournaments took place in France, Sweden and Spain across three days: Friday 25 May, Saturday 26 May and Sunday 27 March 2012 with Montenegro, France, Russia, Denmark, Spain and Croatia qualifying through.

Tunisia’s Raja Toumi top-scored with 29 goals and headed the goals and assists charts with 35. Bojana Popovic had the most assists (15) for her Montenegro side while France’s Amandine Leynaud ended with the best goalkeeping stats – a 52% shot-to-save ratio (32/62).

Two teams from the qualification tournaments would take medals at London 2012, with Montenegro winning silver and Spain bronze.

Tournament 1 (Lyon, France): Montenegro (MNE), Japan (JPN), Romania (ROU), France (FRA)

The young nation of Montenegro would qualify through to their first-ever Olympic Games after winning all three of their games at the Palais des Sports de Gerland in Lyon. These included a two-goal victory against the hosts in their final match with a rotated side after already having qualified. France would eventually take second spot thanks to a five-goal victory in their first match against Romania 24:19.

Tournament 2 (Aalborg, Denmark): Russia (RUS), Dominican Republic (DOM), Tunisia (TUN), Denmark (DEN)

Russia would finish in first place at the Gigantium in Aalborg, after winning all three of their games clearly. They would be followed by the Danes, with two wins, while Tunisia were left wondering what might have been, having led against the Danes at half-time, but ending up with just a solitary victory, against the Dominicans.

Tournament 3 (Guadalajara, Spain): Croatia (CRO), Netherlands (NED), Spain (ESP), Argentina (ARG)

The Palacio Multius de Guadalajara (Aquas Vivas) was the setting for the third qualification tournament and the first step on the way for the host nation Spain on their way to an eventual bronze medal at London 2012.

But it was not simple, and the group became one of the tightest in Olympic qualification history with Spain, Croatia and Netherlands ending on four points each thanks to two wins.

With all three teams beating the South Americans, it went down to a mini-group and Spain and Croatia went through on the better goal difference to the Netherlands, whose four-goal 24:28 loss against Spain saw them have to wait another four years.

MEN’S TOURNAMENTS
The men’s tournaments took place in Spain, Sweden and Croatia across three days: Friday 6 April, Saturday 7 April and Sunday 8 April 2012 with a full European qualification sweep as Spain, Serbia, Sweden, Hungary, Croatia and Iceland went through.

Two of the qualified teams would go on to win medals at the Games with Sweden taking silver and Croatia bronze. Hungary would finish in fourth.

Spain’s Jose Manuel Sierra Mendez and Croatia’s Venio Losert both ended with a 46% save rate, with the Spaniard making 18 saves from 39 shots compared to 12 from 26 from the Croatian.

Iceland’s Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson top-scored with 25 goals and managed 32 goals and assists, while Croatia’s Domagoj Duvnjak topped the assist charts (16).

Tournament 1 (Alicante, Spain): Spain (ESP), Poland (POL), Serbia (SRB), Algeria (ALG)

Serbia pipped Poland to the second and final qualification spot from tournament 1 at the Centre de Tecnificacio in Alicante, Spain, thanks to maths – their 78 goals and 73 conceded saw them on +5, while Poland (75/85) were on -10. This had come after both had finished on three points each having both beaten Algeria, loss to Spain and drawn 25:25 with each other. The hosts were impressive, easily winning all three of their games to finish top.

Tournament 2 (Gothenburg, Sweden): Sweden (SWE), Hungary (HUN), Brazil (BRA), FYR Macedonia (MKD)

Despite the clear final rankings, with Sweden finishing top on three wins and Hungary in second on four points, the Scandinavium witnessed some tight games, including the host nation behind at the break against eventual second-placed Hungary.

Tournament 3 (Varazdin, Croatia): Croatia (CRO), Japan (JPN), Chile (CHI), Iceland (ISL)

The Gradska Sportska Dvorana in Varazdin saw three continents come together for a place at London 2012 but it was Europe which prevailed in the end. Hosts Croatia won all three of their games, including the top-spot clash against Iceland 31:28 and would go on to claim bronze in Great Britain.
