#LetsMove on Olympic Day — and every day

With Olympic Day, which is held annually on 23 June, fast approaching, the International Olympic Committee is launching a new global initiative to encourage people to get active on a daily basis. The campaign is entitled 'Let's move' and pairs with the hashtags #letsmove and #OlympicDay to help raise awareness on social media.

The concept springs from findings such as the fact that 80% of young people do not reach the daily recommended activity level for optimum mental and physical health.

"Daily physical activity has multiple health benefits for our bodies, hearts and minds. That's why on Olympic Day on 23rd June, we invite the world to join us and celebrate the joy of moving by building physical activity into our daily lives," states the IOC website.

"Together with Olympic athletes and the whole Olympic Movement, we want to help everyone, every day to enjoy benefits of sport and ignite a global wave of daily exercise. And it doesn't have to be complicated — a joyful dance, a game of tag, a peaceful walk with a friend, a revitalising run, or simply take the stairs at work."

The IOC states that one of the most common reasons people do not exercise on a daily basis is lack of time, but postulates that including exercise in your calendar is a way to ensure you do attend to it. Hence, the invitation to mark 23 June, Olympic Day, on your calendar and be sure to partake in some physical activity. One option will be a 30-minute workout provided by the IOC, including Olympians, on Olympic Day.

"Whether you are a city, a school, an organisation or an individual, we all have the power to inspire people through movement. Host a local run with athletes, rally the team for a football match or simply take a walk with a friend. Just 30 minutes is all it takes," states the IOC.

In the lead up to Olympic Day, the IOC has been engaging athletes and the broader community to share social media content related to movement — why you love to move, what kind of physical activity you enjoy, special sports skills, training hacks, 'Olympics at home', and so on. So get posting, and get ready to move on Olympic Day — and beyond!
