Kosovo and Uzbekistan triumph at IHF Trophy Women InterContinental Phase

The youth team of Kosovo and the junior team of Uzbekistan won titles at the Women’s IHF Trophy InterContinental Phase, which took place from 28 February to 3 March 2024 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The winners also booked their tickets to the IHF Women's Junior and Youth World Championships in their respective age categories.

In the semi-finals of the youth (U18) competition, Nigeria beat home side Uzbekistan 32:28, while Kosovo earned a more comfortable win against New Caledonia, 27:16. Uzbekistan ultimately won bronze, as they defeated New Caledonia in a third-place match (24:18), while Kosovo defeated Nigeria 22:16 in the final match, improving in the second half after the sides were level at 10:10 at the break.

In the youth (U20) tournament, Great Britain were dominant against Mexico in the semi-final, 31:13, while Uzbekistan secured a spot in the final in a much closer tie against Guinea, 29:27. Guinea went on to finish third, defeating Mexico 27:17 in a bronze-medal game, while 10 goals from Sevinch Erkabaeva powered Uzbekistan to a 33:23 win against Great Britain in the final match.

Notably, the players from the home teams became top scorers of both competitions: Alisa Matskevich scored 26 goals at the youth event, while the above-mentioned Sevinch Erkabaeva netted 28 times at the junior tournament.

This will be the first time when Kosovo feature at the IHF Women's Youth World Championship, while Uzbekistan qualified for the IHF Women's Junior World Championship for the first time since 2016.
