It’s Olympic Day 2025! Let’s Move?

Today, 23 June, marks Olympic Day and the International Handball Federation joins the world in celebrating! It was in 1947 when Dr. Josef Gruss, an IOC member from Czechoslovakia, presented a report on a World Olympic Day celebration, which would primarily be a day for promoting the Olympic idea. The project was eventually adopted, with the first-ever Olympic Day celebrated in 1948 on 23 June—the day when, in 1894, the modern Olympic Games were founded.

Ever since, the International Olympic Committee, the National Olympic Committees, the International Federations, and every member of the Olympic family have engaged in activities and celebrations aimed at honouring the Olympic values and bringing the world together through the power of sport.

This year’s theme—part of the “Let’s Move” campaign launched two years ago—comes in the form of a question: Let’s Move?

With inactivity being a global issue, the World Health Organization (WHO) has identified loneliness as a growing public health threat, particularly among young people. Research also shows that people are more likely to enjoy movement and stick with it when it’s shared. Thus, the IOC invites us to reach out to the people around us and ask them the question that, hopefully, will be met with a positive answer: Let’s Move!

“Sport is joy, sport brings people together. Sport and physical activity are also the low-cost, high-impact tool for healthy bodies, healthy minds, and resilient communities,” states Dr. Thomas Bach on the IOC website. Kirsty Coventry, who as of today is officially IOC President, also reminds us: “Some of the most powerful moments in sport happen outside competition. They happen when a teammate joins you on the days you don’t feel like training, when you work together to reach your goals.”

“Let’s Move?” will continue beyond Olympic Day, with the ambition to keep inspiring and enabling people to move and enjoy physical activity. Whether it’s a walk, a dance, or some passes with a handball—pick your +1 and Let’s Move!
