IHF Rule Interpretation app gets a makeover
24 Apr. 2026
The IHF Rule Interpretation app is strengthening the way the handball community understands and applies the rules, offering a practical, game-oriented learning tool for everyone involved in the sport.
Developed as part of the IHF’s broader modernisation of education and officiating, the app translates the “Official IHF Rule Interpretation” concept into an accessible digital format, aligned with the revised “Rules of the Game – Indoor Handball” published in July 2025. It focuses on usability, helping to bridge the gap between the written rule text and real-game situations. Member Federations, referees, coaches, players and delegates can use it alongside printed or digital rule booklets, benefiting from concise explanations and visual support.
A key strength of the app is its strong emphasis on video. More than 150 situation-based clips from official IHF competitions have already been uploaded across the different chapters of the app in the last months, with many more to follow on a regular basis. These clips, integrated into themed modules, offer concrete, visual examples of rule application, allowing users to see how specific situations are interpreted on court. This approach supports a more consistent understanding of decision criteria and helps transform abstract rules into practical, recognisable patterns.
The content architecture is strictly game-oriented. Chapters and sub-chapters follow the flow of the game and the priorities of modern game management, ensuring that users can quickly navigate to the situations that matter most to them. Each module combines key principles, and visual elements, including embedded videos, designed to make learning more intuitive without oversimplifying the rules.
While the app does not replace the official rule texts, it complements them by providing a dynamic, continuously updated reference. It supports more uniform training of referees at national, continental and international level, offers coaches and players clearer, scenario-based guidance, and supplies media and spectators with more structured, authoritative explanations that can enrich coverage and viewing.
The IHF Rule Interpretation app is available free of charge on Android and iOS, providing the global handball community with a modern, user-friendly tool to develop a shared, up-to-date understanding of the sport’s rules.
