IHF Coaches Symposium Ready To Go in Kumamoto

The 2019 edition of the IHF Coaches Symposium will take place for three days on the fringes of the 2019 IHF Women’s World Championship in Kumamoto, Japan.

The International Handball Federation (IHF) together with the Japan Handball Association (JHA) will jointly hold the symposium which takes place on Saturday 30 November, Sunday 1 and Monday 2 December – and follows the successful event held in France at the 2017 IHF Men’s World Championship.

The programme for the symposium has now been confirmed and provides a unique opportunity for all 150 participants to absorb the latest handball coaching information while experiencing the highest level of the sport in person.

The course features coaches from across the world including Morten Soubak, Gino Smits and more.

The symposium will fall under three main pillars:

1. Women’s development system and coaching for different age categories

i. Keynote Lecture: Introduction to the French way of development

IHF CCM Member, IHF Analyst (all men’s and women’s world championships since 2009), former France men’s national team player, former head coach of the France men’s and women’s youth and junior national teams Paul Landuré (FRA) will deliver this lecture which is hoped will serve as a good case for sustainable high performance in the long term.

ii. The Orange Plan

Henny Nijboer (NED) from the Netherlands Handball Association (NHV) and Gino Smits (NED), former Borussia Dortmund Coach, former Netherlands men's junior national team coach, Netherlands senior assistant coach, coach at Netherlands Handball Academy in Papendal will discuss the ‘Orange Plan’ developed by the NHV since 2001.

iii. Being a top coach in women’s handball

Morten Soubak (DEN) will talk about his varied coaching experiences in Europe, South America (Brazil) and Africa (Angola).

iv. Prevention of ACL injury in women’s’ handball and role of sports science.

2. Asian women’s development

i. Performance development in Asian youth and junior women's handball
Lecture: IHF Council Member, Chair of the IHF Commission of Coaching and Methods (CCM) and former German men’s national team coach Dietrich Späte

ii. Practical sessions: One against One – the Korean Way, Attack and Defence – the Japanese Way

Four-time medallist at five Olympic Games and 1995 IHF Women’s World Championship winner with the Korea women's national team, current head coach of Korea women’s national youth team Oh Seong Ok (KOR) will deliver a practical session of the Korean ‘one against one’ way. Additionally, there will be two practical sessions on the Japanese Way of ‘attack and defence’.

3. Handball @ School – Japan

i. Historical background and future direction

ii. Proposing revised Japanese national curriculum through handball

The symposium will take place at the Uki City Matsuhashi Gymnastics Centre (Wing Matsubase) in Kumamoto, Japan. 

All lectures and presentations will be accompanied by a Japanese interpreter with all participants who attend the three days receiving a certificate of completion.

Also running alongside the course will be a renewal class for Japan Sports Association Sports Instructor Qualification.
