Group E: Who will be first – and who will clinch the final main round spot?

It is decision day in Group E, as round three will be opened by Czech Republic and Slovakia, who will play for third place in the group and a place in the main round. In the second match, Germany and Hungary – both still unbeaten – will play for the top of the table.

Czech Republic vs Slovakia 18:00 CET

While the two leading teams of Group E will determine who will top the table in the second game of the group today, all eyes are on who will follow them into the main round. The Czech Republic will enter this game as a slight favourite as they looked strong against Hungary, only falling short 29:32 in their match on Saturday. Especially Marketa Jerabkova who contributed 10 goals in that game will be eager to help send her team to the next round.

Slovakia have a more balanced, yet not as successful offensive so far in the tournament. Reka Bizikova and Vladimira Bajciova each recorded four goals in the 22:36 loss against Germany. Whoever steps up again in tonight’s game is likely to lead their respective team to the next round.

“First of all, we have to clear our heads, break down things that didn’t work for us. We have to concentrate and prepare well, because it will be a very difficult match. Both teams know what this is about. We have to keep our perspective, focus on our game, our quality. Of course, we will play for the victory,” concluded Slovakia coach Pavol Streicher.

Germany vs Hungary 20:30 CET

One of the highlights of the 25th IHF Women’s World Championship so far! Both teams won their first two preliminary round games with solid performances, looking strong both in offence and defence. Germany are placed first in Group E thanks to a slightly better goal difference.

When the teams met last – at the Women’s EHF EURO 2020 in Denmark – Germany won 32:25 – and are eager to repeat that result. “Now the opponents will be more difficult,” Germany coach Henk Groener said. “But if we keep up our enthusiasm, we have very good chances to be successful against Hungary.”

German internationals Alicia Stolle and Emily Bölk will share their insights into the Hungary team, Groener told German media representatives, as they currently play for Hungary’s club champion Ferencvaros Budapest.

Hungary may have some weaknesses defensively, having allowed both opponents to score 29 goals so far. But with hummel Player of the Match Katrin Gitta Klujber they also have a strong offensive contributor, who can help the team tremendously.
