Group C: Brazil and Cape Verde to fight for second place

All three teams progressing from Group C have already been determined. Sweden, Brazil and Cape Verde will play in the main round, while Uruguay will continue in the President's Cup.

On Monday, Brazil and Cape Verde will fight for second place and the points to carry over to the next stage in a direct duel, while Sweden, who have secured the top position in the group, are scheduled to meet Uruguay.

At Poland/Sweden 2023, both rivals have already lost to Sweden and defeated Uruguay and are now level on two points, with Brazil having a slight advantage thanks to a better goal difference. If the rivals share the spoils in their first mutual encounter on Monday, the South American side will finish second in Group C.

In their second match at the tournament, Brazil proved too strong for their continental rivals Uruguay, earning a commanding 35:24 win in a continental derby. Goalkeeper Leonardo Terçariol stood out in that match with his solid performance, boasting a 41% save rate.

While it was Brazil's 26th victory at the Men's IHF World Championship since 1999, Cape Verde, who qualified for the world handball flagship competition for only the second time, wrote history in their opening match against Uruguay, claiming the first win at this level.
Two days later, the Africans faced a much tougher opposition, co-hosts Sweden, and lost 27:34. However, Cape Verde improved their attack a lot after scoring just twice in the opening 15 minutes and even managed to win the second half as their rivals slowed down.

Despite the loss, the team coached by Ljubomir Obradović progressed to the main round, which is also a historic achievement, and will now try to snatch some points from Brazil. The winner of this encounter will take two points with them to the main round, while the losing side will start the next stage with zero points.

With one match to go, both rivals have their final positions in the group already fixed. After two victories in as many matches, Sweden have secured first place and will start the main round with the maximum of four points. In turn, Uruguay lost both encounters at Poland/Sweden 2023 and will now fight for the President's Cup.

While the Swedes did a great job in the opening 30 minutes against Cape Verde – head coach Glenn Solberg called it "an almost perfect" first half – they were disappointed by their not-so-impressive performance in the second half.

"After the break, we did almost everything we're not supposed to do. We lost a lot of concentration. But we won the match and that was the main goal," centre back Jim Gottfridsson said.

In their last group match, Sweden may rest some key players ahead of the important clashes in the main round. But in any case, Solberg's team have a much better quality than Uruguay. They will be heavily favoured against the South American side, who will probably have to wait for the consolation tournament to earn their first win at the competition.Â
