Greenland course delivers strong start to coaching education pathway
10 Jul. 2026
Handball coaching education in Greenland continued to take important steps forward in June 2026, as the Greenland Handball Federation successfully hosted an IHF D-Licence Coaching Course in Nuuk.
Led by IHF Lecturer José António Silva from Portugal, the six-day course brought together 11 participants - eight men and three women - all of them from Greenland. Every participant successfully passed the course, underlining both the motivation of the group and the value of the programme for the local handball community.
Delivered entirely in English, the course took place from 9 to 13 June in Nuuk and formed part of Greenland’s ongoing efforts to strengthen coaching standards and develop the game at grassroots level. The atmosphere throughout the programme was highly positive, with the lecturer describing the participants’ interest and attitude as excellent.
The course combined theoretical instruction with practical sessions and covered the key elements of the IHF Coaching Education Structure. Among the main topics were training methodology, youth game development, tactical principles in attack and defence, fundamental skills, and the official rules of the game. The practical work was supported by a good level of equipment and a high-quality venue setup, while the close proximity of the sports hall made it easy to move efficiently between theory and court work.
The group was described as well-balanced, with a good overall level before the course began. Several participants were highlighted as showing strong potential, reflecting the depth of coaching talent already present in Greenland. The course also benefited from very professional cooperation with the local organiser and from smooth logistics throughout the week.
One notable feature of the programme was the positive reaction to the use of English as the course language. According to the lecturer, this helped create an enriching learning environment and added further value to the exchange between participants and instructor.
With all 11 participants earning their IHF D-Licence, the course marks a valuable milestone for Greenland handball and its coaching development structure. The strong engagement shown by the participants, combined with the commitment of the Greenland Handball Federation, suggests that the foundation is in place for continued progress in the years ahead.
