Germans too strong for Argentina

The final Group D opening day match of Spain 2019 at the Pavillon Municipal de Deportes de Pontevedra ended in a one-sided victory for Germany, against Argentina.

GROUP D

Germany vs Argentina 43:25 (17:15)

Martin Heuberger’s German side finished the opening day of the 2019 IHF Men’s Junior World Championship on top of their group thanks to a comprehensive 18-goal victory against Argentina.

While a win for Germany was maybe clear before the game, given the record of the European side, Argentina had other ideas and they led by two after 15 minutes (10:8) and were equal with their German opponents with less than four minutes of the opening period remaining (15:15 – 26th minute).

However, Germany registered three unanswered strikes either side of the break and went ahead 18:15 early on in the second half. Despite their best efforts, the South Americans could only score five times in the first 20 minutes of the second half and with just 10 minutes of the match remaining the German lead was unassailable, at 14 goals (35:21).

It was a good day at the office for Germany who were able to rotate their bench and look ahead to their clash against Denmark tomorrow.

Argentina will now lick their wounds and get ready for their match tomorrow, versus Iceland, where they could be without centre back Tomas Peguri who, already with a heavily-strapped left knee, turned awkwardly on his right knee late in the first half and left the court in severe pain.

Best Player of the Match: Hendrik Schreiber (GER)
