“Game changer” Oftedal named on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list

Norway centre back and 2019 IHF Women’s World Player of the Year Stine Bredal Oftedal has been named on American business magazine Forbes’ 2021 30 Under 30 - Europe - Sports & Games list.

She joins a prestigious list full of superstars in the category that “spotlight(s) the next generation of game changers” – a list which includes Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, Slovenian cyclist and Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar and tennis players Daniil Medvedev and Dominic Thiem.

Branded as spearheading the “new generation of handball players that embraces fast, dynamic play over size and physicality,” Oftedal, 29, has been a staple in women’s handball for the past decade, since first emerging in the Norwegian national team in 2010.

“She’s risen steadily playing for the Norwegian national team (she’s the captain) and Hungarian club Györi Audi ETO KC, winning a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, two golds at the World Championships and the IHF Player of the Year Award in 2019,” Forbes wrote.

“I couldn’t be more surprised and I feel extremely honoured to be put on a list next to such big names and remarkable people. It feels unreal and overwhelming in the best way,” said Oftedal of her inclusion on the list.

The 29-year-old centre back has been in superb and consistent form throughout the last decade, also helping her club team Györi Audi ETO KC win the DELO EHF Champions League in 2018 and 2019. With nine goals scored against Buducnost in the first leg of this season’s quarter-finals in the European top competition, Oftedal can help her team seal another trophy come May.

With two IHF Women’s World Championship gold medals at Brazil 2011 and Denmark 2015 and four gold medals at the Women’s EHF EURO, Oftedal could also complete her trio of titles this summer at Tokyo 2020, while the 25th IHF Women’s World Championship awaits in Spain in December.
