French goalkeeper Jemima Kabeya passes away

It is with great sorrow that the IHF have learnt of the passing of French goalkeeper Jemima Kabeya, at only 21 years old.

Kabeya was one of the most talented young French goalkeepers, playing at French side Handball Plan-de-Cuques.

“She was a goalkeeper of great talent and an exemplary teammate, but Jemima was above all a radiant, sunny young woman of immense kindness. Her smile and her commitment will leave an indelible memory in our hearts and in the history of Handball Plan-de-Cuques,” said the French side in an official press release.

The goalkeeper also represented France at the 2022 IHF Women’s Junior World Championship, with the European side finishing on the 13th place, with four wins, two draws and one loss in seven matches.

"Jemima Kabeya was a respected, appreciated, promising and talented young player. Her tragic death plunges the entire handball family into mourning and our thoughts are with her parents in this painful ordeal," said Nodjialem Myaro, the President of the French women's handball league.

Starting handball at Paris 92, Kabeya has been playing at Handball Plan-de-Cuques since 2022, extending her contract for two years in 2024. She was also one of the top goalkeepers in the French league this season, with a 35.6% saving efficiency and 78 saves.

The IHF President, Dr Hassan Moustafa, would like to extend condolences to the family, friends, teammates, and all those who were touched by Jemima’s presence. The loss of such a bright and vibrant young life is a tragedy beyond words.
