Five teams clash for the 2022 Women's Youth South and Central American Championship title

The 2022 Women’s Youth South and Central American Championship will be staged in Taubaté, Brazil, from 26 to 30 April, as five teams face off for the coveted gold medal.

After the 2020 edition was cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, that rendered the competition impossible to hold, the best women’s youth teams in the South and Central American Handball Confederation will battle for the three spots reserved for them at the IHF Women’s Youth World Championship, that will take place in North Macedonia from 30 July to 10 August.

Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay will be the teams that will face off in a round-robin tournament, with the five sides facing one another, as the winner will be the team topping the table after the 10 scheduled games.

Hosts Brazil and Argentina have qualified for the IHF Women’s Youth (U18) World Championship six times each, with Brazil finishing seventh in 2014, while Argentina’s best result was the sixth place in the inaugural edition of the competition, in 2006.

Paraguay have played three times in the competition, while Chile and Uruguay have both qualified twice, but never finished higher than 12th place.

With an advantage to play as the hosts of the tournament, Brazil already proved on the court why they are considered favourites as they secured a 34:15 win against Chile in a friendly game on Thursday.

In another friendly match played in Taubaté on Sunday evening, just two days before the throw-off of the 2022 Women’s Youth South and Central American Championship, Argentina clinched a 25:20 win against Chile.
