Familiar faces to battle it out for the title at the 2025 IHF Men's Club World Championship

The final day of the 2025 IHF Men’s Club World Championship will decide the final standings of the competition, but all eyes will be on the big final, scheduled for 20:00 EEST (19:00 CEST), when European powerhouses Veszprém HC and FC Barcelona will collide for the title.

It's Veszprém’s third final in the competition, while Barcelona are in their eighth final, having won five titles so far, all with Xavi Pascual, Veszprém’s current coach, on the bench.

PLACEMENT MATCH 5/6

What’s at stake? The title for this edition of the IHF Men’s Club World Championship. Both Veszprém and Barcelona have won the three matches so far in the New Administrative Capital, but only the winner of the final will secure the trophy. It is a winner-takes-all scenario, one which Xavi Pascual, Veszprém’s coach, knows all too well.

Pascual has won six editions of the IHF Men’s Club World Championship, five with Barcelona and one with his current club, boasting a 100% record in this situation. He knows how to motivate his side and has only lost a single match at the IHF Men’s Club World Championship, in 2015, when Barcelona finished third.

How well do the teams know each other? Pretty well. Over the last eight years, Barcelona and Veszprém had met 11 times, with the head-to-head record being well split, with six Barcelona wins and five wins for the Hungarian side. Veszprém have won the last meeting, though, in the semi-finals of the previous edition of the IHF Men’s Club World Championship, 39:34, after a 29:29 draw at the end of the regular time.

Four Veszprém players – goalkeeper Rodrigo Coralles, defender Thiagus dos Santos Petrus, centre back Luka Cindrić and left back Ali Zein have played for Barcelona. On the other hand, Ludovic Fabregas returned to Barcelona this summer, after spending two seasons in Veszprém.

What do the stats say? Basically, that the two finalists are very close. Barcelona and Veszprém have the same number of saves from their goalkeepers – 52, with the Hungarian side with a slight better efficiency, 47.7% compared to 43.3%. Barcelona have scored 114 goals, nine more than their opponents, but have conceded 11 more, 68 to 57.

Both teams have left wings as top scorers – Dani Fernandez and Hugo Descat – with 20 goals. Dika Mem and Ian Barrufet have scored 17 and 15 goals respectively, while the Hungarian side, arguably the side with the biggest depth in the competition, have Ali Zein as their second best scorer, with 10 goals.

What about the others? SC Magdeburg will not be in the final for the first time in four editions, but the German side is favoured against Al-Ahly in the bronze medal match, the warm-up for the big final. After a 29:26 win two days ago against Sharjah SC, Zamalek will look for another win to secure the fifth place, while Taubate and California Eagles are locked in the battle for the seventh place, with a draw enough for the Brazilian side to finish higher than their American counterparts.
