Egypt dominate to take third consecutive crown at the CAHB African Men's Junior Handball Championship

For the 14th time in history and for the third time in a row, Egypt secured the gold medal at the 2024 CAHB African Men's Junior Handball Championship, sweeping their opponents on the way to the title.

Egypt continued a fantastic run of consistency in the competition, one which they have dominated since 2018, extending their winning streak to 17 matches in a row, as the last loss at the CAHB African Men's Junior Handball Championship came in 2016, eight years ago, when they lost the last match of the edition, against Tunisia.

Eight teams lined up at the start of the competition in Mahdia, Tunisia, with two groups of four teams each forming the preliminary round, with every side progressing to the quarter-finals, where the top team in each group faced the fourth-placed side in the other group, while the second-placed teams met the third-placed teams.

In Group A, Egypt dominated their opponents, taking a 45:18 win against Mali, a 56:28 win over Guinea and a close 29:27 win against Morocco, clinching the first place, followed by Morocco, Guinea and Mali.

In Group B, hosts Tunisia swept their opponents, with a 31:21 win over Libya, a 39:30 win over Rwanda and a 28:23 win over Algeria, which finished second, as Rwanda ended up on the third place and Libya on the fourth place.

The quarter-finals saw the two favourites ā€“ Egypt and Tunisia ā€“ clinch big wins against the fourth-placed teams in the opposite groups. The reigning champions dominated Libya, 39:15, while Tunisia secured their largest win in the competition against Mali, 44:15.

Algeria had a tough match against Guinea, needing extra-time to secure their place in the semi-finals, with a 36:35 win, while Morocco also had two sweat against Rwanda, finishing with a 34:30 win and clinching their semi-finals berth.

Egypt steamrolled Algeria in the semi-finals, 38:32, displaying once again their attacking prowess, while Tunisia had to sweat against Morocco, despite starting with a 11:7 lead after 30 minutes. In the end, Morocco failed to convert their comeback attempt into a win, with Tunisia taking a 22:21 win, to set up a final with Egypt.

There, Egypt controlled the match from the start until the 50th minute. First, they had a 17:11 lead, and with seven minutes to go they opened up a 10-goal lead, which proved to be unassailable, despite Tunisia trying to tie the match in the dying minutes.

Eventually, Egypt, the most decorated team in the history of the CAHB African Men's Junior Handball Championship, clinched a 29:25 win, extending their winning streak to 17 matches in the competition, and securing their 14th gold medal in the continental competition.

This was Tunisiaā€™s eighth silver medal and 18th medal overall, being second in the overall standings, just after Egypt, which have 19 medals, 14 of which gold.

In the bronze medal match, Algeria, runners-up in 2022, clinched a 23:20 win over Morocco to secure their 13th medal at the CAHB African Men's Junior Handball Championship.
