Draw yields well-balanced groups at the 3rd IHF Wheelchair Handball World Championship
18 Jul. 2024

The draw for the 3rd IHF Wheelchair Handball World Championship, which is scheduled in Cairo, Egypt, from 16 to 21 September 2024, took place on Thursday, 18 July 2024, in Basel, Switzerland, at the IHF Head Office.
The eight teams were divided into four pots, with certain provisions for the draw, with no teams from the same continent being able to face off in the preliminary round of the competition.
First, the teams in Pots 2 and 3 were drawn, as France headed to Group A, while Portugal in Group B, joined by Japan and India respectively.
As Egypt, who were in pot 1 and row 1, had the right as hosts to assign themselves to a group of their choice, the African powerhouse chose Group B, where Chile were also headed, as they could not meet Brazil, which went into Group A.
Therefore, the reigning champions of the competition, Brazil, completed the Group A, alongside debutants France, Japan and the United States, while the champions of the 2022 World and European Wheelchair Handball Championship, Portugal, are in Group B, alongside hosts Egypt, India and Chile.
The competition will be played between 16 and 21 September in Cairo, Egypt, and all the teams from the preliminary round will then head to the quarter-finals. The winners of the four quarter-finals will extend their chances of winning the coveted trophy, as they progress to the semi-finals, with the knockout phase ending with the medal matches – the final and the bronze medal match – on 21 September.
