Draw procedure for Paris 2024 Olympic Games revealed

After the conclusion of the Olympic Qualification Tournaments, which took place in March, for the men’s competition, and April, for the women’s competition, the line-up for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games is now completed, with 24 teams at the start.

With exactly 100 days before the start of the handball competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the 24 qualified teams will find out their fate, as the draw will take place on Tuesday, 16 April, at 17:30 CEST, in the French capital.

There are 12 teams in the men’s competition and 12 teams in the women’s competition, with the preliminary round having the same format like in the previous editions of the Olympic Games, with two groups of six teams each, with the best four teams in each group progressing to the quarter-finals.

The draw will be conducted with the assistance of two former French superstars. For the women’s competition, Jerome Fernandez will decide the fate of the 12 teams. Fernandez, a two-time Olympic champion, is the all-time top goal scorer of the France men’s national team, with 1463 goals scored in 390 matches.

For the men’s competition, the draw will be carried out by former France left wing Siraba Dembélé, a world and European champion, plus a silver medallist at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Dembélé is the second most capped player in France’s history, with 291 matches and the second best scorer, with 848 goals.

In both draws, teams from Pot 6 will be drawn first, followed by the teams from Pot 5, Pot 3, Pot 2 and Pot 1. Then, France, the hosts, will have the prerogative of choosing their group, while the other team from Pot 4 – Sweden in the women’s competition and Slovenia in the men’s competition – will be headed to the other group.

Eight countries – Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Norway, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden – will have both teams represented in the draws, while Argentina, Croatia, Japan and Egypt complete the men’s competition, while Angola, Brazil, the Netherlands and the Republic of Korea complete the women’s competition.
