‘Winning the ball on defence

“Defence is an essential part of the game, however, handball education tends to focus more on offensive skills such as passing, catching and shooting.

When kids play handball, the first thing they want to do is to score a goal. Scoring gives a sense of joy and achievement and is perceived to be the fondest undertaking in handball. Making kids recognise defence as a fun undertaking will be crucial for the development of their skills in defence and goalkeeping.

As this presents a challenge to coaches and teachers, this session will show practical examples of exercises as well as engage participants to think of well-designed activities for defence that will make it more interesting for the learners.

Activities that provide both enjoyment and memorable experiences are essential to help kids appreciate the value of defending and goalkeeping. It will make them comprehend the phases involved and will promote a mindset that gives equal importance to scoring goals and winning the ball on defence.”
