Defence and passive play key topics as 1st IHF Live Online Symposium continues

Following the successful launch with the opening lectures at the end of June, the 1st IHF Live Online Symposium continues with four lectures this week on Friday, 3 July and on Saturday, 4 July. As with all presentations in the 1st IHF Live Online Symposium, the upcoming lectures will focus on coaching and refereeing subjects, but are of relevance to all working in handball and all enthusiasts.

On Friday, the second session of the 1st IHF Live Online Symposium will open with a presentation from IHF referees Mads Hansen and Martin Gjeding. The Danish referees recently ended their on-court partnership after 24 years and multiple top international championships whistling together, including IHF World Championships and EHF EUROs.

Hansen and Gjeding will discuss passive play and whistling before the allowed six passes once the passive play forewarning signal is shown by the referees, as well as direct passive play decisions without the forewarning signal. Their presentation will begin at 13:00 CEST on Friday, 3 July.

The second lecture on Friday will concentrate on tactics and defensive strategies from a coaching point of view, and will be presented by IHF Commission of Coaching and Methods (CCM) member and current Brazil women’s team coach Jorge Duenas. Duenas previously led the Spain women’s team to four medals at IHF World Championships, EHF EUROs and the Olympic Games.

Duenas will concentrate on the fundamental criteria for a modern defender and will outline typical mistakes in one-on-one situations from the defensive point of view. Position, distance, situation and orientation are the four pillars that will be outlined as part of this lecture, starting at 15:00 CEST.

The symposium will continue on Saturday, 4 July at 13:00 CEST, with IHF CCM member and head of coach education at the French Handball Federation Paul Landure presenting on a topic closely related to Duenas’ lecture – coaching flexible defensive strategies. Landure posits that such a strategy and collective defensive intelligence are key to success at the top level, and that even at a youth level it is critical for the entire team to master their individual and collective tactical intentions.

IHF CCM member Paul Landure and IHF PRC member Bjarne Jensen will lecture on Saturday.

The second session will conclude with the final lecture on Saturday afternoon, presented by IHF Playing Rules and Referees Commission (PRC) member and Chairman of the Danish Referee Committee Bjarne Jensen. Following on from the referees’ presentation on Friday, Jensen will discuss passive play tendencies in handball today.

Jensen’s concentration on passive play will be explaining passive play situations with consideration for both coaching and refereeing perspectives. This subject is part of a broader effort from the IHF PRC and CCM to ensure understanding of game situations from all standpoints.
