Coming up: Action-packed January to throw off 2024 in style

2024 will be a year full of handball, with the highlight being the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, but more exciting competitions are around the corner in the summer, with the 2024 IHF Women’s Junior World Championship and the 2024 IHF Women’s Youth World Championship scheduled.

Until the summer, though, there are plenty of competitions ready to deliver dramatic moments and exciting matches, as January is reserved for the continental men’s competitions, which will send other sides to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

24 teams will line up for the Men’s EHF EURO 2024, which is due to take place in Germany, between 10 and 28 January. Six venues – Düsseldorf, Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg, Mannheim and Munich – will be hosting the competition, with the reigning world champions, Denmark, being one of the clear favourites to snatch the gold medal.

Other powerhouses like France, reigning European champions Sweden, France or hosts Germany will be ready to pounce, as this projects to be one of the most balanced editions of the EHF EURO in history, with the winners also securing a place at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Three teams – the Faroe Islands, Greece and Georgia – will be making their debuts in the European premium competition, while Romania are returning for the first time since 1996, breaking the longest drought of appearances for a team in history.

Moving over to Africa, the 2024 CAHB African Men's Handball Championship will be taking place in Egypt between 17 and 27 January, as the hosts are aiming to secure a three-peat, after clinching the trophy in 2020 and 2022.

16 teams are at the start, including debutants Rwanda, as well as the runners-up from the 2022 edition, Cape Verde, which have made it to the final part of the competition for the third time in a row and for the third time in history.

With a win, Egypt would seal their ninth title in their history, moving closer to the all-time record in the African top competition, held by Tunisia, with 10 titles.

16 teams are also lining up for the 2024 AHF Asian Men’s Handball Championship, which is scheduled between 11 and 25 January. Isa Town and Manama will be the two hosts in Bahrain, where the top sides in Asia face off.

Qatar, with a new coach in Goran Djokic, will be aiming to extend their winning streak, which is now at five editions of the competition, but Bahrain, which have been runners-up four times in this span, are still waiting for their maiden title.

Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, is the host of the 2024 South and Central American Men's Handball Championship, where hosts Argentina and Brazil will battle it out once again for the bragging rights of the continental champions title. The competition will take place between 16 and 20 January.
