Coming up: Action awaits in arenas all over the Globe in fiery August

The month of August will provide more drama and exciting in the handball world, with the highlight being the 2025 IHF Men’s Youth World Championship, which will take place in Egypt between 6 and 17 August, with 32 teams at the start.

The 11th edition of the world handball flagship competition will be organised for the second time in Africa, after the first one was hosted by Tunisia in 2009, and will see 32 teams competing for the title, including the reigning champions, Spain, as well as the champion from the previous edition, Egypt.

Five continents will be represented in the competition, with three teams – Kosovo, Guinea and Uruguay – making their debuts.

The first edition of the W17 EHF EURO with 24 teams at the start will take place in Podgorica, Montenegro, and it will be a qualification event for the 2026 IHF Women’s Youth World Championship.

Powerhouses like France, Denmark, Germany or Hungary will be at the start, but teams like Poland, Lithuania, Slovakia and Turkiye will also be in the mix, in the competition which take place between 30 July and 10 August.

The top 14 teams in the final rankings will secure their places for the 2026 IHF Women’s Youth World Championship.

The second edition of the Junior Pan American Games will take place in Asuncion, Paraguay from 7 to 23 August with handball at the heart of the continental multi-sport event for those born from 2003 to 2013.

Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba and Paraguay, Brazil, United States of America, Mexico and Chile will take part in the men’s competition, while in the women’s competition the eight qualified teams are Mexico, Cuba, Brazil and Argentina, Uruguay, United States of America, Chile and Paraguay.

10 teams will line up at the start of the 2025 AHF Asian Women’s Junior Championship, which will take place in Uzbekistan between 20 and 29 August. The preliminary round will see two groups, with Uzbekistan, the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and India in one group, with the Republic of Korea, Japan, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan taking part in Group B. This competition is a qualification event for the 2026 IHF Women’s Junior World Championship.

The beach handball season will also be in full swing, with The World Games taking place between 7 and 17 August in Chengdu, the People’s Republic of China. In both the men’s and the women’s competition, only eight teams will take part.

To qualify for The World Games, teams had to be best from their continent and in the top 12 of the 2024 IHF Men’s and Women’s Beach Handball World Championships, held in Pingtan, China.

In the men’s TWG 2025 competition, hosts China are joined by world champions Croatia, silver medallists Denmark, bronze medallists Portugal and the fourth-placed Germany, alongside Brazil (as highest-placed South and Central America team) and Tunisia (as highest-placed African team). The highest-placed Asian team, Qatar, withdrew their participation and have been replaced by Spain, who finished fifth.

The women’s TWG 2025 competition features home nation China alongside world champions Germany, silver medallists Argentina, fourth-placed Denmark, fifth-placed Spain, sixth-placed Portugal and the highest-ranked Asian side, Vietnam, who finished ninth. World championship bronze medallists Netherlands withdrew their participation and have been replaced by seventh-placed Croatia.
