Chilean Handball Federation holds first in-person seminar since start of pandemic

In collaboration with Club Deportiva Leonas Balonmano, the Chilean Handball Federation held their first face-to-face coaching course in Chile since the beginning of the pandemic on 18 February.

The course was held in Peñalolén, a Chilean commune in Santiago Province, and led by speaker Iñaki Aniz. Aniz was head coach of the Chile women’s national team in 2013/14 as well as in 2017/18. Additionally, he was the head coach of Spanish league team Helvetia Anaitasuna in 2014/15 as well as from 2018 to 2020.

Around 20 people, coaches from different regions such as Santiago, Quinta and Ovalle, attended the seminar on different tactical aspects in handball, complying with all sanitary measures.

With Iñaki Aniz passing through the country, he took advantage of the opportunity to guide through the four sessions of the seminar with unpublished content. The first part focused on one-on-one defence as a basis for the tactical defensive training, where the development of a good defender in handball was illustrated, starting with basic training.

The second session focused on playing two-on-one towards the wings in attack and which group tactics are essential to be able to successfully solve this situation as well as technical-tactical content and training requirements.

After a short break, Aniz demonstrated the importance of counter-attacking in a Spanish league team, illustrated by the example of his former team Anaitasuna and highlighting the differences in efficiency to play faster (or not) in handball. The seminar ended with taking a closer look on the attacking against direct and indirect back defenders in 6-0 defence, working out different strategies to play successful attacks against those defences.

All coaches received a certificate and video material after the course. As the course had the goal of improving the sport, most of the participants were youth and senior club coaches, who can pass on to and use their newly gained knowledge in their respective team and club.

Further coaching courses in a different setting will follow soon. The aim is to hold training activities within the Club Deportiva Leonas Balonmano and in collaboration with the Chilean Handball Federation throughout the year 2021. The two organisations have been working together to increase the development of handball at the national level and for activities of benefit to the entire Chilean handball community are continued.
