Cameroon mourn head coach Serge Christian Guebogo

The Cameroon Handball Federation announced the passing of the Cameroon women’s senior national team coach, Serge Christian Guebogo, who suddenly passed away on 14 February.

A former handball player, Guebogo, who was 43 years old, made his debut in coaching in 2005 at the junior women’s team of Tonnerre de Yaoundé, a local club in Cameroon.

Guebogo slowly worked his way onto the top, as he had his first stint as the Cameroon women’s senior national team coach between 2012 and 2016, helping his side finish third in the CAHB African Women’s Handball Championship.

For three years, he served as the coach of another club from Cameroon, Dynamique de Bokito, before returning as the head coach of the Cameroon women’s senior national team in 2019.

“My dream is to do what has never been done with this selection. It is to give extreme joy to Cameroonians and Cameroon through this team. I know that many want to see this team shine,” said Guebogo after qualifying for the IHF Women’s World Championship in 2021.

Cameroon finished in 28th place at Spain 2021, with two wins in seven matches, and will also take part at Denmark/Norway/Sweden 2023 after the African side finished in second place at the CAHB African Women’s Handball Championship twice in 2021 and 2022.

The IHF would like to extend deepest sympathies to Guebogo’s close family and friends and also to the Cameroon Handball Federation.
