Brazil keep continental crown at the South and Central American Men's Handball Championship

Brazil sealed their second continental title at the South and Central American Men's Handball Championship, with a clean sweep of their opponents in the competition which saw six sides vying for the crown in Buenos Aires, Argentina, between 16 and 20 January.

The third edition of the South and Central American Men's Handball Championship was played in a round-robin format, with two big favourites at the start, hosts Argentina and Brazil, with the former side taking a crucial win at the 2023 Pan American Games, which saw them qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Nevertheless, Brazil bounced back in style and delivered five wins in five matches, taking their second crown in three editions, avenging that loss at the Pan American Games on Argentina’s home court, with the hosts winning only three of the five matches played.

Still, before the last match, which saw the two South American powerhouses clash, Argentina had an outside chance and needed to win against Brazil, despite the reigning champions boasting an excellent attack, having won 41:16 against Uruguay, 57:22 against Paraguay, 47:11 against Costa Rica and 34:28 against Chile.

However, Brazil were down 14:13 at the break against Argentina, with the hosts boasting a lot of experience, with Diego Simonet, Federico Fernandez or Leonel Maciel between their ranks.

But with a six-goal outing from left back Haniel Langaro and six goals from right back Vinicios Carvalho, Brazil bounced back and took a superb 28:26 win, sealing the title with the maximum number of points and extending their winning streak in the South and Central American Men's Handball Championship to 10 matches.

Argentina, who had previously drawn against Chile in one of the best matches of the competition, 27:27, finished second, three points less behind Brazil and with a plethora of questions surrounding their current form.

Wins against Paraguay (32:16), Costa Rica (35:12) and Uruguay (29:18) saw Chile seal the third place in the final standings and the bronze medal, while Paraguay, Uruguay and Costa Rica finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

Brazil’s left wing Rudolph Hackbarth was the top scorer of the competition, with 38 goals, an average of roughly eight goals per match, as his form was nothing short of superb throughout the whole competition.

The top three placed sides secured a spot at the 2025 IHF Men’s World Championship, with Brazil qualifying for the 16th time in a row, Argentina making it for the 15th time in a row and Chile sealing their eighth consecutive berth in the world handball flagship competition.
