Brazil avoided their first winless IHF Men’s World Championship since Portugal 2003, dominating South American rivals Uruguay, 37:17.

The 20-goal drubbing was by far Brazil’s largest margin of victory ever in the competition, smashing the previous ten-goal record against Chile at Sweden 2011.

However, hampered by injuries and missing key players, Brazil record their worst finish since Sweden 2011, ending the 27th IHF Men’s World Championship in 19th place.

With a flawless record against Uruguay and superior experience in the roster, it was only normal for Brazil to have the upper hand against their South American counterparts.

But for the first 18 minutes, Uruguay really managed to keep Brazil in check, as the gap never grew bigger than three goals in Brazil’s favour.

However, the key component for a successful team is consistency and Uruguay never displayed that against Brazil.

As hummel Player of the Match Rogerio Moraes and right wing Rudolph Hackbarth each scored five goals for Brazil, Uruguay had no answer neither in defence, nor in attack.

Eleven turnovers and boasting a meagre 41 percent attacking efficiency, Uruguay faltered, with two Brazilian unanswered runs of 4:0 and 5:0 setting up a clear lead at the break, 18:7.

It was the lowest number of goals conceded for Brazil in the first half at an IHF Men’s World Championship since Tunisia 2005, against Kuwait.

It did not get better for Uruguay in the second half. Failing to score for 11 minutes and 36 seconds, Jorge Luis Botejara’s side enabled Brazil to have a flawless 11:0 run, that saw the gap balloon to 17 goals, 24:7.

Despite coach Alvaro Herdeiro substituting several players in the second half, Brazil continued to pounce and another 6:0 run driven by wing Guilherme Torriani set up a commanding 32:11 lead with 12 minutes to go, as back Jose Luciano also scored seven times in the second half.

Eventually, Brazil sealed a 37:17 win, their biggest-ever at the IHF Men’s World Championship, ten goals higher than their previous record, a 38:28 win against Chile in the 21/22 placement match at Sweden 2011.

It was also Brazil’s 25th World Championship win, having played 88 games.

Uruguay end their maiden IHF Men’s World Championship with a sole win, the 10:0 one after Cape Verde’s withdrawal and five losses, enough for 24th place at Egypt 2021.

On the other side, Brazil, finish 19th, their worst placement since Sweden 2011, when they were 21st , after winning the least amount of games since Tunisia 2005.
