Benchmark lessons from the 2025 IHF Men’s World Championship analysed in the new World Handball Magazine Tech edition
22 Aug. 2025

The International Handball Federation is pleased to announce the release of the latest issue of the IHF World Handball Magazine – Tech, dedicated exclusively to the 29th IHF Men’s World Championship 2025, held across Croatia, Denmark, and Norway in January 2025. This edition offers in-depth analysis of the landmark competition, where Denmark secured their fourth gold medal in a row, examining the technical and tactical trends that shaped this year’s competition.
Compiled by the experts of the IHF Commission of Coaching and Methods, with Paul Landuré, Jorge Dueñas, Jochen Beppler, Mats Olsson, Salim Belmessaoud, and editorial coordinator Dietrich Späte contributing—this issue provides comprehensive coverage of all key aspects and innovations witnessed during the event.
The magazine opens with a general analysis of the 2025 IHF Men’s World Championship, setting the stage for detailed technical breakdowns of the 108 matches played. Special focus is given to the centre in the close-range shooting area, underlining how breakthrough actions consistently yield higher chances of success, as explored by Dietrich Späte, Chairman of the IHF Commission of Coaching and Methods (CCM).
Furthermore, an overall analysis of offensive actions in empty-goal situations is presented, detailing the evolution and effectiveness of the seven-against-six tactic, which, though less frequent, was executed with significantly higher quality throughout the championship.
Späte then explores offensive strategies against various defensive tactical setups, presenting key findings after analysing several teams in the competition.
The new issue of the IHF World Handball Magazine – Tech, as well as the previous editions of the IHF World Handball Magazine – Tech and the IHF World Handball Magazine can be read digitally on the IHF Education Centre website.
Former Spain, Brazil and Slovakia coach Jorge Dueñas also presents an intriguing case study of Italy’s unexpected attacking strategies in positional play without the use of a line player, offering insights into alternative tactical approaches, while also delving into the specialised role of the line player—their importance and offensive potential—highlighting the nuances of contemporary handball attack.
The goalkeeper coach of the Norway women’s national team, Mats Olsson, also pens an article analysing the goalkeeping performance at the 2025 IHF Men’s World Championship, the trend saying that the performance of the shot stoppers against long-distance shots improved.
In a collaborative article, Paul Landuré and Salim Belmessaoud examine the principal cooperative actions in positional attack, synthesising the strategic behaviours employed by top teams.
As with previous editions, the new IHF World Handball Magazine – Tech is available digitally via the IHF Education Centre website. Visitors to the Education Centre will find a wealth of resources, including age-appropriate training materials, technical analyses, tactical explanations, and case studies drawn from major international events such as World Championships and Olympic Games.
Within the IHF Education Centre, users can currently find extensive learning materials divided into six categories: coaches, referees, teachers and delegates, as well as a separate coaches library designed for teachers and a section about top players in the sport. Across all the categories, materials for teaching and coaching handball from an early age all the way to the highest level of adult competition are provided, as well as the vital areas surrounding the management of the game.
