2023 IHF Men's Super Globe participants learn their fate after draw

The 16th edition of the IHF Men's Super Globe will take place in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, between 7 and 12 November, the second consecutive edition with a 12-team line-up at the start.

With the competition only a few weeks ahead and all the participating clubs confirmed in September, the final preparations for the competition are on their way and the teams have now learnt their opponents in the group phase.

Conducted by the IHF Competitions Director, Patric Strub, the draw was held in Basel, Switzerland, in the IHF Office, with the 12 qualified teams divided into three pots, with four groups of three teams drawn. Only the winners of each group will progress into the knock-out phase and will still have a chance to fight for the coveted title.

Host team Khaleej had the right to choose their group after the teams from pots 1 and 3 had been drawn, according to the draw procedure and the rules established by the International Handball Federation (IHF).

Moreover, there was continental protection for all the teams from the same continent, which meant that they could not be drawn into the same preliminary round group.

Group A looks to be the most balanced one, as FC Barcelona, the most decorated team in the competition, which received a wild card for this edition of the IHF Men’s Super Globe, will face Egyptian powerhouse Al-Ahly and hosts Al-Noor. Barcelona, a five-time winner of the competition, have never lost a match in the group phase.

With Khaleej having the right to choose their group, they headed to Group C, where they face SC Magdeburg, the reigning champions and the current EHF Champions League Men title holders, and debutants University of Queensland from Australia.

KS Kielce, the runners-up in the EHF Champions League Men, taking part for the third time in history in the IHF Men’s Super Globe, will be facing Bahraini club Al-Najma and American side San Francisco CalHeat in Group D, where they will be overwhelming favourites.

Another European side, Füchse Berlin, are the favourites in Group B, as the two-time IHF Men’s Super Globe winners and the reigning champions in the EHF European League Men, will be playing in Group B, alongside Kuwait SC, who return for the second time in a row to the competition, and debutants San Fernando HB.

The winners of each group will qualify for the semi-finals, with the final scheduled for Sunday, 12 November.
