12 teams line up at the start of the 2024 CAHB African Women's Handball Championship

The 2024 CAHB African Women's Handball Championship will see 12 teams vying for the coveted continental title, with the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kinshasa, hosting the 26th edition of the competition between 27 November and 7 December 2024.

This will also be a qualification event for the 2025 IHF Women’s World Championship, with the top four teams securing their tickets for the world handball flagship competition, which will debut on 26 November 2025, in Germany and the Netherlands.

The 12 participating teams have been divided into two groups of six teams each, with the top four sides progressing to the knock-out phase, while the last two-placed sides in each group will head to the President’s Cup and the Placement Matches.

12 of the last 13 editions of the CAHB African Women's Handball Championship were won by Angola, with the sole exception coming in 2014, when Tunisia secured the title. Once again, Angola will be the big favourites, with plenty of experience and talent at their disposal, as proven at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, when they finished on the ninth position.

Angola, the most decorated team in the history of the competition, with 15 titles and 18 medals in total, have been drawn into Group B, where they will face the hosts, DR Congo, Tunisia, Guinea, Cameroon and Uganda, a well-balanced group, as Cameroon were the runners-up in the previous two editions of the competition, which took place in 2021 and 2022.

Group A will also see some high-profile clashes, with Congo, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, Cape Verde and Kenya trying to secure the tickets for the next phase of the competition. While Senegal and Congo, the team which won the second-largest number of gold medals, four, have plenty of experience, for Cape Verde and Kenya this is only the third and second apperance in the competition respectively.

The preliminary round will be played between 27 November and 3 December, while the quarter-finals are due to be played on 4 December. The semi-finals are scheduled in Kinshasa on 6 December, while the medals will be awarded on 7 December.

The top four sides will represent the African continent at the 2025 IHF Women’s World Championship.
