03 Sep. 2024
The 10th edition of the AHF Asian Men's Youth Handball Championship will throw off on Tuesday, 3 September, in Amman, Jordan, with the big final scheduled for 14 September, in the Princess Sumaya Hall in Amman, Jordan.
Thirteen teams will line up at the start of the competition, with the top five teams in the final standings qualifying for the 2025 IHF Men’s Youth World Championship, which will take place next summer.
The Republic of Korea enter the competition as the defending champions, as well as the most decorated team in the history of the AHF Asian Men's Youth Handball Championship, having won seven medals so far, including the gold one in the inaugural edition, in 2005, in 2014 and in the last edition, which took place in Bahrain in 2022, when they secured a 26:22 win over the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The 13 participating teams have been divided into four groups in the preliminary round – three of three teams each and one of four teams – with the top two sides in each group progressing to the next phase of the competition, the main round.
In Group A, the reigning champions, the Republic of Korea, will face Bahrain and Iraq, while in Group B, Japan, which have won five medals in the competition so far, meet India and hosts Jordan.
Qatar, which have also won five medals in their history, including two titles in 2012 and 2014, face Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in the battle of the Gulf teams in Group C, while Group D is the only group with four teams, as the Chinese Taipei, the People’s Republic of China, Kuwait and the Islamic Republic of Iran face off for the coveted two main round berths.
The top two teams in each of the two main round groups will qualify for the semi-finals, due to take place on 12 September, while the big final and the bronze medal matches are scheduled for 14 September.
