Denmark stretch winning streak with commanding win over Senegal
03 Dec. 2025
Denmark kept their flawless run alive with a commanding 40:26 win over Senegal, controlling the match and cruising to their fourth straight high-scoring performance at Germany/Netherlands 2025.
Main Round, Group I
Denmark vs Senegal 40:26 (20:11)
Undefeated Denmark needed around 15 minutes to get their game flowing and open a four-goal lead. Until then, Senegal did a solid job keeping it close, with Sienaba Sy and Maire Fall carrying the attacking load. Their deep 6–0 defence initially disrupted Denmark, but the Danes quickly found solutions and began slicing through with ease.
On the other hand, Senegal had a much harder time. Breaking through Denmark’s defence proved a challenge and it showed in their 53% attacking efficiency. Denmark fed off those mistakes and misses, running fast transitions with their average attack lasting just 20 seconds, while Senegal needed 42 in those opening 15 minutes.
Danish head coach Helle Thomsen was not entirely pleased with her team’s performance, but this was also not the usual Danish squad, with several players shifted out of their natural positions. Still, they held a 13:9 lead when Yacine Messaoudi called a time-out, trying to breathe new life into Senegal’s attack.
However, it did not work. Denmark showed their true colours and produced a scoring run powered by Julie Scaglione, stretching the lead to 16:10 and leaving Senegal goalless for six minutes. As Denmark closed in on a double‑digit advantage, it became clear Senegal lacked the depth and rotation needed to truly challenge one of the competition favourites.
Right at the start of the second half, Denmark hit 21:11 and, with a comfortable cushion, began rotating more while keeping full control. Their biggest lead came at +14 (38:24) when Sarah Paulsen netted her second of the day. The closing minutes brought no major shifts and Denmark, for the first time at Germany/Netherlands 2025, reached the 40‑goal mark after previous tallies of 39, 36 and 35.
Denmark’s win was built on ten scorers, led by Julie Scaglione with 11 goals, while hummel Player of the Match Kristina Jørgensen added eight. For Senegal, their most experienced player Gnonsiane Niombla stood out with seven goals and Marie Fall remained flawless with six.
With this victory, Denmark join Hungary at the top of the standings as the two undefeated sides on six points, nearly sealing their quarter-final spot while also resting key players. Senegal remain the only team in Main Round Group I without a point, sitting at the bottom after Japan’s surprise win over Switzerland earlier in the day.
