Burundi and Mauritania secure wins in the first matches at the IHF Trophy

On Monday 13 May 2024, the Men’s IHF Trophy Zone 5 Africa got underway in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and the first matches were played at both the youth and the junior age categories.
In the youth (U18) tournament, Burundi claimed an opening 45:16 victory against Djibouti, while in Group B, Ethiopia were given a 10:0 win against Tanzania, who failed to arrive at the match at due time. On day two, Kenya are scheduled to face Burundi at 9:00 (local time), and Rwanda meet Tanzania at 11:00.
And In the junior (20) event, Burundi had the upper hand against Djibouti, 41:12, and in the same Group A, Rwanda were granted a 10:0 victory versus Kenya. In Group B, Uganda downed Somalia 43:17, and home side Ethiopia took a commanding win against Tanzania, 50:23.
On the second day of the competition, Rwanda meet Djibouti at 9:00, Burundi play Kenya at 11:00, Uganda face Tanzania at 13:30, and Ethiopia take on Somalia at 15:30.
IHF Trophy Zone 2 also produces interesting matches
Four youth and six junior teams from the Western Africa are taking part in the Men’s IHF Trophy Zone 2 Africa, which is held in Nouakchott, Mauritania, from 13 to 17 May 2024. The first matches at both tournaments were held on Monday 13 May.
In the youth competition, Guinea won an exciting match against Senegal, 36:30, while home side Mauritania were given a 10:0 win versus Sierra Leone. On day two, Guinea face Sierra Leone at 17:00 (local time), and Senegal meet Mauritania two hours later.
The format of the junior (U20) event is different, as six participants are divided into two groups. In Group A, Guinea secured a 10:0 walkover win against Sierra Leone, while in Group B, 11 goals from Amadou Seck powered Mauritania to a 29:16 win over Gambia after they led 16:3 at the break.
On day two, Mali enter the race, as they take on Sierra Leone at 17:00, while Guinea enjoy a rest day. Senegal also play their first game, against Gambia at 19:00, and Mauritania have a day off.
