Key highlights of the day: New main round berths to be awarded at Poland/Sweden 2023

Eight teams are through to the main round at Poland/Sweden 2023 after the fourth day of competition, with 24 matches elapsed from the 112 scheduled in the competition.

Spain are through in Group A after a win against Chile, while France and Slovenia are through from Group B. Slovenia in particular had a superb evening against Poland, beating the co-hosts (32:23) with an outstanding defensive performance.

All berths in Group C are sealed, with co-hosts Sweden making it two out of two against Cape Verde, as Brazil joined the two sides into the next round with a thorough win against Uruguay.

Moving over to Group D, Hungary qualified in style with a superb comeback against Iceland, taking an unexpected win after being down throughout the first 50 minutes. In the other match of the day, Portugal beat the Republic of Korea and sealed their main round berth.

We are now focusing on what will come, and there is little doubt that the match of the day will be the one pitting together Germany and Serbia in Group E. Both sides won their matches, so the winner will earn safe passage to the main round.

Reigning champions Denmark aim for a main round berth themselves when they face Bahrain in Group H. At the same time, fellow Scandinavian side Norway have earmarked the match against Argentina as another must-win to carry their hopes into the next round.

Last but not least, Group G sees Egypt face Morocco in an all-African battle, while Croatia aim to seal their first competition win when they meet the USA.

The United States of America won their first match in the history of the competition, breaking a 25-match losing streak, and we sat down with their left back, Aboubakar Fofana, to see how everything unfolded and what the feelings are in the USA team.

At his fifth edition of the IHF Men’s World Championship, Qatar’s left back Rafael Capote is leading by example for his side, talking about the past, present and future.
