Key highlights of the day: First quarter-final berths up for grabs?

64 games have been played at the 27th IHF Men’s World Championship in Egypt and another exciting eight matches are on today’s programme at Egypt 2021.

The main round is well underway, as the fight for the eight places that ensure a quarter-final berth is harder than ever for the teams involved.

Group I threw off yesterday, as Spain dealt Germany yet another blow in a rollercoaster game, which saw Germany lead by three (25:22) with 16 minutes to go, only for them to eventually lose 28:32. Hungary are aiming higher and higher, after their 29:23 win against Brazil, while Poland shook off an uninspiring first half to secure a 30:16 win against Uruguay.

The Hungarian side enjoyed their best start at the IHF Men’s World Championship since 1986, boasting hot hearts, cold heads and a strong mentality. You can read more about their plans here.

In Group II, Denmark beat Qatar 32:23, taking their fourth win in a row. Croatia went back to winning ways, securing the third win in a row, with a competitive performance against Bahrain, while Argentina can still dream of advancing to the next stage after their 28:24 win against Japan.

Teams in Group III and Group IV are now back at work on Friday and this day will be a crucial one for Portugal and Norway. As France would secure a quarter-final berth with a win against Iceland, Portugal face a must-win game against Switzerland, while Norway eye the same against Algeria in their battle for a quarter-final berth.

In Group IV, Sweden face Slovenia in a pivotal game. The Swedish side currently top the table with five points, with Slovenia and Egypt close behind, tied on four points. The ‘Pharaohs’ need a win against Belarus, with the Russian Handball Federation Team looming in the shadows prior to their game against North Macedonia.

Group II of the President’s Cup is also on at the New Capital Sports Hall and it is likely that the group winner’s will be decided when Chile and Austria face off.

From rags to riches, this is practically the perfect example of perseverance and dreaming high. Eight years ago, Rogerio Moraes was not even a professional player, but now he is playing for Hungarian powerhouse Telekom Veszprem and is spearheading Brazil’s challenge at Egypt 2021.
