Key highlights of the day: A fitting ending for a superb edition of the IHF Men’s World Championship

The moment everybody has been waiting for is finally here. The last day of the 2023 IHF Men’s World Championship is upon us, after 18 days of competition, with only two sides staying alive in the hunt for the trophy – reigning champions Denmark and Olympic champions France, who will clash in the big final, scheduled at 21:00 CET in the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm.

Will Denmark be the first team in history to win the title three times in a row? Or will it be France’s turn for the first time in six years and the seventh time in history? Learn more about the match in our preview which has plenty of stats and trends.

In the bronze-medal match, Sweden face Spain, hoping to end the competition on a high after winning seven matches in a row, only to find themselves hitting a wall in the form of France in the semi-finals, as Jim Gottfridsson’s absence was there to be seen.

In the first matches of the day, Germany and Norway face off for 5th place, while Egypt and Hungary will aim to finish seventh in their last matches in the competition at Poland/Sweden 2023.

We have previewed the final with two excellent features on Dika Mem and Mikkel Hansen, two of the stalwarts facing off in the last act at Poland/Sweden 2023. Mem has already won a title in 2017, but he was only a fringe player and now says everything is different in the title campaign

On the other hand, Hansen, the all-time leading goal scorer at the IHF Men’s World Championship, is eager to make history once again with the Denmark team, being fully confident that the Scandinavian powerhouse can three-peat.

Have you wondered how exactly the best bits of such an event enter your houses through the TV? Well, we have an explanation in our feature on how the competition is produced by SPORTFIVE.

All the statistics, tailor-made for everyone, are just one click away, so you can follow your favourite player and see who’s the best scorer, the best assists provider and the best goalkeeper.

Only two players have scored over 50 goals – Chile’s Erwin Feuchtmann and Denmark’s Mathias Gidsel, who have both scored 54 goals. Gidsel is followed by Germany’s Juri Knorr, who has scored 49 goals, with both players having one match to play.

Gidsel will become only the third Denmark player after Anders Eggert and Mikkel Hansen to secure the top goal scorer award if he keeps the five-goal distance over Knorr and scores at least once against France.
