Summary of the Groups C and D of match day 2

Group C
France – Kazakhstan 49:18 (20:7)

The French women who clearly defeated the team from Kazakhstan 49:18 didn’t feel sympathy for their opponent. It was the first match for both teams at this WCh – the French team had a day of rest on the first match day whereas the team from Kazakhstan couldn’t play against Hungary, as they lacked their complete equipment on the first day. The match will be made up on 4 August. France was leading 20:7 at half time and succeeded in performing well during the second half, so that the French team was the well-deserved winner of this match. However, this victory probably doesn’t give reliable information about the real strength of the team which is among others considered as favorite. C. Rassinoux was the best scorer of the match (nine goals).

Democratic Republic of the Congo – Hungary 23:40 (12:18)
The two quarter-final contenders Sweden and France will be joined by the team from Hungary which defeated DR Congo 40:23 (18:12), after their opening match against Kazakhstan had been canceled. All three teams have high hopes to reach the next round (2:0 according to the current group ranking). The Hungarians had difficulties during the first half, as their opponent defended brilliantly. DR Congo surprisingly led 8:7 after 14 minutes. Only in the second half, the Hungarians became more offensive and lived up to their favorite status. Hungary’s best scorer was Orsolya Toth (eight goals), whereas Julie Betu Mvita also scored eight goals for DR Congo. Only 24 hours after their opening match, the Hungarians will play the postponed match against Kazakhstan (16:00 local time) and afterwards they will have the opportunity to watch the match between Sweden and France (18:00 local time).

Group D
Russia – Spain 31:28 (13:13)

The team from Russia also had a successful start to the WCh. After a day of rest, they defeated the team from Spain 31:28, which had narrowly beaten Korea the day before (27:26). The girls from Spain played better at the beginning and led until the 25th minute, but they weren’t able to extend their lead. A temporary two-goal lead of Russia could be equalized before half time (13:13). Things changed during the second half. Thanks to a strong defensive performance, Russia extended its lead goal by goal. The Russian team led by eight goals after 50 minutes (27:19) before they slowed down a bit. The top scorers were V. Garanina from Russia (nine goals) and Lara Gonzales from Spain (eleven goals).

Thailand – Korea 18:51 (6:27)
The girls from Korea didn’t have any reason for concern after their clear 51:18 (27:6) victory against the underdog Thailand. The Koreans recovered from the narrow defeat against Spain in their opening match and maintained their possibility of reaching the next round. The best scorer of the winning team was Minyong Kim (13 goals). After a day of rest, the Koreans will clash Brazil in their next group match. Thailand (0:4) will compete against Spain.
