Wheelchair Handball
As handball should be a sport for everyone, the IHF started its wheelchair handball activities to make handball accessible to people with physical disabilities. The goal for the coming years is to develop wheelchair handball all over the world for men and women on regional, continental, and international level and to bring wheelchair handball to the Paralympic Games.
Without uniform rules, different variants of wheelchair handball have been played throughout the world for a long time. Therefore, as the governing body for international wheelchair handball competitions, the IHF established a working group in order to establish rules for two variants of the game, wheelchair handball four-a-side and wheelchair handball six-a-side. After the 1st IHF Four-a-Side Wheelchair Handball World Championship Egypt 2022 and the World and European Wheelchair Handball Championship Portugal 2022 (six-a-side), the IHF decided to focus on the four-a-side variant for future IHF wheelchair handball events.
A very important part of wheelchair handball is classification. Together with international classifiers, the IHF created a wheelchair handball classification manual. To learn more about classification please click here or the field below.
