Croatia reach the final – Semi-final thriller against strong Germans; Egypt win over Austria in placement round

Semi-Final 1

Croatia vs. Germany 29:26 (13:15) 

This match was a promotion for handball. Both teams played on a really high level. They presented all the elements of an attractive handball. And it was an exciting game as well. Germany missed at the end of the first half the possibility to take the lead by four goals. The Croatian goalkeeper saved a 7-meter and some seconds later his team scored to the 13:15 after 30 minutes. In the second half Croatia caught up to a 15:14 within few minutes. Than, the Germans started for the next attack and took over the lead by 23:20. It was not enough, now the south-east Europeans fought back to 25:23 after 48 minutes. What a thrilling match! German coach Christian Schwarzer tried to react with a team time out. The result was a furious fight in the last minutes. The German goalkeeper saved two 7-meters from Croatia, on the other hand the Germans forgot to score. Finally Croatia decided the match in the last minutes by 29:26 and celebrated their victory. It is the third final at Youth World Championships for the Croatians. Croatia won the Championship in 2009 and lost the final two years before in 2007 against Denmark.

 

Placement round 13-16

Austria vs. Egypt 28:36 (15:17) 

After a long period without victories, Egypt won in the placement round over Austria with a clear 36:28. Austria played the first quarter of the match quiet good, but than the Egyptians took over the lead and played sovereignly for a long time. But 10 minutes after the break Austria caught up. All in all Egypt was the better team. The talents from the river Nile played in the last 20 minutes on a higher level, found back to their own strength and won the match finally with a clear 36:28.
