5th Asian Women’s Club League Handball Championship to throw off in Almaty
30 Sep. 2022
Seven teams from six countries will participate in the fifth edition of the Asian Women’s Club League Handball Championship, which will be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, between 1 and 9 October. The matches will be played at the Universal Sports Complex Dostyk.Â
Alatau Arulary Club and Handball Club Dostyk (both Kazakhstan), Uzbechka Club (Uzbekistan), Foolad Mobarakeh (Islamic Republic of Iran), SK Sugar Gliders HC (Republic of Korea), T-Sports Club (India) and Al-Qurain SC (Kuwait) are the clubs who will contest a trophy in a round-robin competition.Â
Zanko Sports Club from Iraq was also supposed to participate but had to withdraw. On 15 September, Astana Nur Sultan Club also withdrew but was replaced by fellow Kazakh side Handball Club Dostyk to avoid reducing the number of participating teams.
Notably, three of four previous editions of the Asian Women's Club League Handball Championship were also held in Kazakhstan, and local clubs Kaysar Club (twice) and Almaty Club became winners. In 2017, when Uzbekistan hosted the tournament, the Uzbek AGMK Club lifted the trophy.
The event's fifth edition was originally scheduled for 2020, then 2021, but was postponed both times. Now the competition will take place after a three-year break – and it will witness a new winner, as all the teams who triumphed in the past are not among the participants this time.Â
