26 May. 2025

16 teams lined up at the start of the SCA Men’s Club Championship 2025, which took place between 18 and 24 May in Santiago de Chile, Chile.
Four Brazilian sides, four teams from Argentina, five teams from Chile and one from Paraguay, Uruguay and Peru took the courts in Chile, as they were divided into four groups of four teams each in the preliminary round.
Reigning champions Handebol Taubaté, which won three of the previous five editions, were sent to Group A, where they comfortably won the group, with the best goal difference, +53, and the lowest number of goals conceded.
Taubaté first delivered a 44:25 win against Chilean side MET, followed up by a 35:12 win over another Chilean side, Ovalle, and a 32:21 win over Argentinian side Colegio Ward, which finished second, thanks to a 30:22 win against MET and a 26:23 win over Ovalle.
In Group D, another Brazilian powerhouse, EC Pinheiros, dominated, taking a 39:16 win over Partille, from Peru, a 32:23 over Chilean side USAB and a 40:22 win over Uruguayan side Colegio Aleman. USAB finished second, with wins over Colegio Aleman, 29:23, and Partille, 37:13.
The two Brazilian sides in Group B, FMO/Portugués and Nacional, finished on the top two places. FMO/Portugués took wins against Chilean side Kutral, 25:20, and Argentinian side Universitario de Córdoba, 41:13, while dispatching Nacional, 34:26, in the final match of the group.
The two Argentinian sides in Group C, Dorrego and San Fernando HB, finished on the top two places, with Dorrego ending up first, thanks to a superior goal difference, after the first match in the group saw the two sides finish in a deadlock, 24:24.
But as Dorrego took a 43:18 win against Liceo Nacional de Maipu and a 46:29 win over Pilar, they had a +42 goal difference, as opposed to San Fernando HB’s +18.
The top two sides in each group progressed to the quarter-finals, with three Brazilian sides and one Argentinian side making it to the semi-finals.
Favourites Taubaté did not impress against fellow Brazilian side Nacional, but they eventually sealed a 34:28 win, as they would face Dorrego in the semi-finals, after the Argentinian side clinched a 35:21 win over USAB.
FMO/Portugués and former winners San Fernando HB engaged in a highly-contested quarter-final, but the Brazilian side took a 20:16 win, while Pinheiros steamrolled into the semi-finals, thanks to a 40:24 win over Colegio Aleman.
In the semi-finals, Taubaté delivered a 23:18 win over Dorrego, while in the battle of the Brazilian sides, Pinheiros dominated FMO/Portugués, taking a 26:20 win, setting up a crunch final against Taubaté, the fourth in six years and the second consecutive one.
Taubaté started the final strong and had a 4:3 lead, but after a 5:0 unanswered run, which proved to be the backbone of their win in the final, they went on and opened a 14:8 gap.
Pinheiros bounced back, but the MVP of the final, Taubaté’s goalkeeper, Lucas Santos, provided some fantastic saves, including a key one in the end of the match, when his side had a 21:20 lead, to help Taubaté clinch a 22:20 win.
Taubaté won the competition for the fourth time, after their wins in 2019, 2022 and 2024, and are the first team in the history of the SCA Men’s Club Championship to retain their title and win it in back-to-back seasons.
In the bronze medal match, FMO/Portugués secured a 35:22 win over Dorrego and completed an all-Brazilian podium.
