The International Handball Federation mourns the death of Dr Mohamed El-Amin, former president of the Egyptian Handball Federation and a prominent figure in Egyptian handball administration, whose work spanned sport, education and the development of handball at national and continental level.

El-Amin became one of the most important figures in Egyptian handball administration in the last decade. In March 2021, he was appointed chairman of the temporary committee tasked with managing the Egyptian Handball Federation. He remained at the head of the federation after a new temporary management committee was appointed in April 2022, with El-Amin once again entrusted with leadership.

A professor of sports health at Helwan University, El-Amin combined an academic background with a long involvement in handball and sports administration. Al-Ahram described him in 2023 as a figure with an extensive career in handball, voluntary sports work and academia.

With an academic background in sports health, El-Amin repeatedly spoke about the importance of bringing scientific expertise into Egyptian handball, including physical preparation, performance analysis and medical support. He also advocated wider talent identification and the development of players outside the traditional centres of Egyptian handball.

His tenure was also closely connected with Egypt's growing role as a host of major international handball events.

In 2022 and 2024, Egypt hosted the IHF Wheelchair Handball World Championship, with the Egyptian team playing the final in both editions. 

His involvement also extended beyond Egypt. In 2022, El-Amin was elected as a vice-president of the Arab Handball Federation, giving him a role within the wider development and administration of the sport across the Arab world.

For a man whose professional life bridged academia, handball and sports administration, his legacy is reflected not only in the teams and competitions of his time, but also in his emphasis on education, scientific development and building the next generation of Egyptian and African handball.
