Bulgaria men's national team coach, Iliyan Vasilev, passes away

The International Handball Federation (IHF) is deeply saddened by the passing of Iliyan Vasilev, the esteemed Bulgarian coach who led the country's men's national team to remarkable success at the IHF Men's Emerging Nations Championship. Vasilev passed away at age 61, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to handball that spanned generations.

More recently, Vasilev's most prominent achievements with Bulgaria came at the IHF Men's Emerging Nations Championship, where he demonstrated exceptional tactical acumen and leadership. In 2023, he guided the Bulgarian "Lions" to a historic bronze medal, falling just short in the closing stages but cementing the team's status as a rising force among developing handball nations.

Vasilev returned triumphantly for the 2025 edition in Varna, Bulgaria, where he once again led the team to the podium, this time securing the silver medal.

These back-to-back silvers at the Emerging Nations Championship represented the pinnacle of Vasilev's recent coaching tenure with Bulgaria. Despite serious health challenges, he remained committed, even leading the team in Euro 2028 qualifiers against Türkiye in January 2026 – a testament to his unwavering passion.

A pioneering figure in Bulgarian handball, Vasilev was the first Bulgarian to play in the French elite league. Born in 1964 in Dobrich, he amassed over 250 caps for Bulgaria (1983-1995), won multiple domestic titles with CSKA Sofia and NSA Sofia, and later achieved success as a coach in France under legendary mentor Daniel Constantini.

The IHF President, Dr Hassan Moustafa, joins the entire handball community in extending its deepest condolences to Mr. Vasilev's family, friends, and all those who had the privilege to work alongside him, as well as for the Bulgarian Handball Federation. His legacy will continue to inspire the sport for years to come.
