Al Ahly are still in the hunt for the second place in Group B at the 2026 IHF Men’s Club World Championship, after a 35:17 win against Burgan SC.

After this result, Veszprem HC qualify to the final, where they play against FC Barcelona, as Ahly meet Fuchse, in a bid to secure a place in the bronze-medal match.

Al Ahly conceded an eight-goal loss against Veszprem in their opener at the 2026 IHF Men’s Club World Championship and the Egyptian side lost any chance to play in the final after the Hungarian side beat Fuchse Berlin, but the hosts still can finish second, provided they secure a win in the last match against the German side.

This scenario is possible after Al Ahly opened their account with a clear win against Burgan SC, the Asian champions, in the final match of the second matchday of the Group Phase of the competition, leading from start to finish to secure their first two points.

Five of Al Ahly’s players featured for Burgan in the AHF Asian Men’s Club Championship, which means that the two sides knew each other well and for the first seven minutes, the two teams were almost deadlocked, as Burgan managed to stay close.

But Omar Khaled, Al Ahly’s wing, delivered a fantastic first half, with eight goals from nine shots, outscoring the Kuwait side entirely, helping Al Ahly to open a six-goal lead, 12:6, after a 7:2 run for the Egyptian side.

As Burgan scored only three goals in the next 23 minutes, Al Ahly led their opponents at half-time by eight goals, a gap which turned in double digits after only six minutes in the second half, 19:9. By that time, Al Ahly’s goalkeeper, Mohamed Ibrahim, had 13 saves from 22 shots, for an outstanding 59% saving efficiency.

With the win already in the pocket, coach David Davis rotated his squad, but the gap still grew, with goalkeeper Abdelrahman Homayed saving all the first five shots he faced, which, in turn, were converted into goals by Al Ahly on the fast breaks, opening a 17-goal lead, 31:14, with seven minutes to go.

Eventually, Al Ahly clinched a 35:17 win, much to the joy of their 300 fans who cheered for them throughout the whole match in the New Administrative Capital Hall.

Al Ahly’s win means that the Egyptian side will now fight for the second place in the group with Fuchse Berlin on Tuesday. Consequently, Veszprem HC have won the group, having won against both sides, and will fight in the final against FC Barcelona.

Burgan SC still have to play against Veszprem, but cannot go higher than the fourth place, setting up a clash against Montada in the Placement Match 7/8.
