With their debut appearance at the IHF Women’s Youth Beach Handball World Championship this year, Mexico’s women add their name to the list of female teams representing the North American country on the global stage.

Twice before the senior women’s team have played at an IHF Beach Handball World Championship and three times the women’s junior side have played at an IHF Women’s Junior World Championship.

Part of the coaching staff for those two senior beach handball world championship appearances was Citlalli Argelian Estrada Juarez who helped guide the Mexican women to 12th at Russia 2018 and 15th at Greece 2022.

Juarez is now head coach of the youth team and is relishing the chance to test herself and her team against fellow debutants Senegal and Tunisia in their preliminary group, as well the fourth-placed European championship side Hungary and winners of the first-ever youth beach handball world championship: Mauritius 2017.

“We are excited to face some of the best teams in the world,” says Juarez. “Being in this world championship is already a great achievement, but our goal goes beyond that: we want to be key players and make history for women's beach handball in Mexico.”

Seven of the 13 named in Juarez’s squad play their club handball for Colima, including centre back/left wing Guadalupe Ramos Sanchez, who Juarez describes as “…quick, courageous and accurate in finishing, while bringing explosive energy to the court”.

Juarez will be hoping that Sanchez can inspire her side to put in a good performance as the sole representative from the North America and the Caribbean Handball Confederation (NACHC). The NACHC nominated Mexico for Tunisia 2025, to take their continental allocation spot.

“We are also very motivated by the possibility of earning a spot in the Youth Olympic Games,” adding coach Juarez in relation to Tunisia 2025 being a qualification event for Dakar 2026.

“It is a clear goal for us, and we are making a great effort to present and prepare both teams at the highest possible level.”
