Denmark win against hosts China in front of record attendance, Chinese Taipei write history at China 2024

After claiming their third consecutive wins at the 2024 IHF Women's Youth World Championship, Denmark and Hungary will start the main round with two points. And in the battle of debutants, Chinese Taipei celebrated their first-ever win at this level, as they proved too strong for Greenland, while Denmark beat People's Republic of China, 28:20, in front of 5,050 spectators.

What happened: Denmark handed hosts People's Republic of China their first defeat in the competition, finishing top of Group E and taking two points to the main round. The fight was really tight in the opening half, as both sides took turns in the lead, and the European side had a just one-goal advantage at half-time. The rivals were still level at 19:19 in the 43th minute, but then Denmark enjoyed a 6:0 run in the next 13 minutes, which proved crucial. Zenia Hald Madsen finished the game with a 41% saving efficiency, and Andrea Bjertrup Jensen scored eight goals, contributing a lot to their team's third straight win. The match provided a new record of attendance for the IHF Women's Youth World Championship, with 5,050 spectators.
After Nigeria and Kosovo had claimed their maiden victories at the IHF Women's Youth World Championship, Chinese Taipei also wrote history, taking their first-ever win at this level. Notably, the Asian side defeated Greenland, who also play their first IHF Women's World Championship but are still without a win. Chinese Taipei were superior from the opening minute, conceding just five goals in the first half, and their goalkeeper Yu Jun Fu made a special contribution, delivering 13 saves for a 54% save efficiency, so the Asians will start the President's Cup with two points.
In Group F, Hungary had the upper hand against Norway in an all-European clash, so they will start the main round with two points. Led by the unstoppable right back Virag Fazekas, who finished the match with 13 goals from 13 attempts, the Hungarians were particularly impressive in the first half, and a seven-goal lead at the break (17:10) allowed them to feel confident. Norway improved their game in the second half, and they slashed the gap to 24:27 with six minutes to go, but Hungary held their nerve and clinched a victory.
In the same group, Argentina claimed their first win, defeating Kazakhstan by 14 goals, and will start the President's Cup with two points. Kazakhstan fought hard in the low-scoring first half, as Argentina led 12:9 at the interval, but the second half was more one-sided, as the South American side conceded only four goals in 30 minutes. Goalkeeper Lola Nunes Fridmana played a big role, finishing the game with 11 saves and 52% save efficiency, and her teammates scored 12 goals from fast breaks.
Stat of the day: 25 – the number of goals scored by Denmark's Andrea Bjertrup Jensen at China 2024 so far. The wing is the top scorer of the tournaments, two goals ahead of Virag Fazekas from Hungary.
What's next: Group III of the main round will throw off at Monday, as Denmark and Hungary will start will two points, while People's Republic of China and Norway have no points. In the President's Cup Group III, Chinese Taipei and Argentina start with two points, while Greenland and Kazakhstan are yet to take their first points.
