Denmark, People's Republic of China, Hungary and Norway all reach main round at China 2024

The last four matches on Friday determined four more teams who secured their berths at the main round of the 2024 IHF Women's World Championship.

Hosts People's Republic of China and Denmark progressed after taking their second wins in Group E, while Hungary and Norway maintain their perfect record in Group F and are also through. In turn, Greenland, Chinese Taipei, Kazakhstan and Argentina are now certain to proceed to the President's Cup.

GROUP E

  • Greenland vs Denmark 8:42 (5:20)
  • People's Republic of China vs Chinese Taipei 29:20 (12:8)

GROUP F

  • Kazakhstan vs Hungary 9:45 (5:22)
  • Norway vs Argentina 28:17 (13:9)

What happened: Denmark stayed on top of Group E after a commanding win, as they defeated Greenland by 34 goals, 42:8, which is actually the same margin as two days before, when the Danish side had beaten Chinese Taipei 47:13. The Scandinavian side was even more prolific in attack, with all 14 outfield players scoring at least once, while goalkeepers Freja Fonseca Nielsen and Zenja Hald Madsen combined for 18 saves and restricted Greenland to just eight goals.

On Wednesday, People's Republic of China had claimed their biggest-ever win at the 2024 IHF Women's World Championship, beating Greenland 46:17. But now they had a bigger challenge against Chinese Taipei, especially in the first half of the match seeing together two Asian sides face off.

Three minutes after the break, the home side led by just two goals, 10:8, but they scored twice before half-time and further pulled clear after the restart. In the end, hosts China took a clear win, as Fengying Pan scored six goals from six attempts, and goalkeeper Yihan Sun boasted a 45% save rate.

In Group F, Hungary delivered the biggest win of the day, 45:9 against Kazakhstan. They scored 19 goals from fast breaks, and left wing Fanni Bede became their top scorer with seven goals from eight attempts. Just like in their opening match against Norway (9:43), Kazakhstan netted only nine times, but early in the match, it looked like they improved their attack, as Hungary led 10:5 by the 16th minute. But in the remaining 45 minutes, the Asian side scored just four goals, while Hungary were solid in defence and cruised to a commanding victory.

Norway found it harder to defeat Argentina, as the South American side enjoyed a good start and led 8:5 by the 20th minute. However, then the Scandinavian team found their rhythm and ended the first half with a 8:1 run, taking a four-goal lead. In the second half, Norway continued to dominate, and even if their 54% shooting efficiency was not perfect, it was better than Argentina's 40%. Right wing Vanessa Gulbrandsen stood out with her nine goals, which each of the Norwegian goalkeepers, Leah Isabel Langaard and Ella Gunnarsdottir, delivered a 47% save efficiency.

Stat of the day: Although Chinese Taipei ultimately lost 20:29, their player Ching Lin became the top scorer of the match with nine goals, nearly half of her team's tally. With 12 goals, she is 12th in the top goal scorer standings, led by Denmark's Andrea Bjertrup Jensen, with 17 goals

What's next: 13 of 16 main round berths have already been sealed, with three more tickers to be booked on Saturday. In their last preliminary round matches, Denmark will meet People's Republic of China, and Hungary will face Norway, with the winners of these games will carry over two points to the main round.
