The second stage begins as main round offers a glimpse of the final road to the podium

After an intense first two days of competition, the 2022 IHF Men’ Youth Beach Handball World Championship enters the main round stage and consolation round. All teams will play twice on the third match day.

In the main round, two groups of six teams each will be battling it out to finish in the top four of their groups to ensure a quarter-final spot on Saturday (18 June).

In Main Round Group I, Sweden and France confirm their impressive preliminary campaigns with four points carried into the next stage each, while Islamic Republic of Iran and Croatia are on two points each. Brazil and Qatar have zero and lie in fifth and sixth spots.

The tri-continental group features just one all-European encounter when Croatia face Sweden in a repeat of their European Championship clash in Bulgaria last year.

Back on the sand in Varna in July 2021, Sweden won 2-0 (23:19, 24:19) on their way to the title and are likely to prove just as strong this year judging by their performances in Greece so far.

Germany and Jordan top Group II (four points each), followed by title-holders Spain along with Argentina on two points each. Hosts Greece and Ukraine make up the group, without points in fifth and sixth.

The consolation round features the USA, Czech Republic, Togo and Uruguay. The Czech team are by far the strongest in their group – the Europeans the only side to have won a game, after they beat Jordan in their final preliminary group. Despite that win, it was not enough as they lost on the head-to-head with Greece, with whom they drew level on points.

The USA take on Uruguay in a Pan American clash, while Togo will relish a chance to rest overnight following a good second period performance against Brazil in their final preliminary group game. They face Uruguay, followed by Czech Republic.
