President's Cup Group I: Angola and Uzbekistan eye second wins

In their opening matches of the President's Cup, Angola and Uzbekistan earned their first wins at Spain 2021, and now they are eager to build on that success, playing against the Islamic Republic of Iran and Cameroon, respectively.

Angola vs Islamic Republic of Iran 15:00 CET

Since 1989, Angola have won 14 African Championships, so their victory on Thursday against continental rivals Cameroon was hardly surprising.

After a slow start, 'As Perolas' firmly took the match under their control to claim a comfortable win by an 11-goal margin, 35:24.

"In the first half, we were not so good, but we entered the second half with more concentration, did better both in defence and attack, and improved little by little," Angola's coach Filipe Cruz said.

Now his team are eager to win the President's Cup Group I, but in order to do it, they have to do well in the two encounters against the teams from Asia.

The next rivals are Iran, who are the only debutants at this World Championship. So far, the team coached by Ezzatolah Razm Gar have lost all four games at Spain 2021.

However, some of their players did well – for example, line player Elnaz Ghasemi, who scored nine goals against Uzbekistan and was named hummel Player of the Match, although Iran lost 32:37.

And while Iran are hardly favourites against Angola, the Asian side will try to show their best handball and spring a surprise.

Cameroon vs Uzbekistan 17:30 CET

Similar to Iran, Cameroon have lost all their four matches at the competition so far. After finishing bottom of Group B behind RHF, Serbia and Poland, the team coached by Serge Guebogo were defeated by Angola in their opening match of the President's Cup in an African derby.

Cameroon, who are participating at the World Championship for the third time, are determined to bounce back against Uzbekistan, whom they have never faced.

However, the central Asian team are now in high spirits, as on Thursday, they claimed their first-ever win at the World Championship, beating Iran in a high-scoring game, 37:32.

On their debut back in 1997, Uzbekistan played in a draw with Canada but lost four other games, and now, in their ninth match at this level, they finally celebrated a victory which made them happy.

"It was a hard game, but we are very satisfied because it was our first win at the World Championship," said centre back Madina Khudoykulova, who scored 11 goals against Iran.

"We have a very young team, most players are 20 to 22 years old and only a few are older, so this team will further progress in future," Uzbekistan's coach Zafar Azimov added.
